New Year’s Blast From The Past: Check Out The Philly Dude At The Mummers Day Parade

That’s me on the right, the Philly Dude on New Year’s Day 1976, at the traditional, annual Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade down the city’s Broad Street in South Philadelphia. Thanks to my old pal Dave Miers for digging this gem out of his Phillipsburg (N.J.) archives!

Happy New Year, 2022!

Forty-seven years ago I was a recent college grad, about to begin a long career as a journalist starting in New Jersey, then California, then to Hawaii where I retired after 37 years and began the journey I’m on today.

On New Year’s Day when the above photo was taken, I went with a few friends to the annual Mummer’s Day parade down Broad Street in South Philadelphia, a colorful lot of revelry involving feathered, costumed marching bands featuring saxophones, banjos and accordions. It’s been long a Philadelphia tradition on New Year’s Day and continues to be an important part of the city’s cultural heritage today, one of those unique local events that no one should miss in their life!

For me, a lot of life has passed by from the day that photo was taken and tomorrow’s New Year celebration. Yet in retrospect it seems like just the blink of an eye. Funny how that is. I can honestly say that I don’t regret any of it, since I’m still here, still moving, still having the time of my life.

Thanks to so many of you who’ve been along for the ride for all or some part of the way with me. I’m looking forward to much more. Life is good and I’m still moving.

Wishing everyone peace, joy, hope and good health in the coming year on this New Year’s Day 2022.
