My travels, which include visits to cemeteries in most places I go, recently took me to Alexandria, Virginia, where I found this remarkable headstone for Sovereign Brown, a member of the New York State Volunteers who fought for the Union in the Civil War.
Brown died in Alexandria, Va., on Dec. 7, 1862, at the tender age of 14 years and six months.
His gravestone, photographed here in Alexandria National Cemetery, where he is buried, bears the epitaph, “He was a true Patriot and a good Soldier.”
Let’s remember them all this Memorial Day, and never forget.
I once heard someone refer to cemeteries as “outdoor museums”. Inscriptions, headstone iconography and cemetery designs all help tell a story that is unique to our families, communities and country. Sovereign Brown’s story is interesting provides insight into who we are as a people. Thanks for sharing such a touching story on this solemn day, Dave. Be well.
